Need to belong theory: biologically based need for interpersonal connections. Surviving alone can be very difficult which is why we need people and interaction in order to survive. Even the threat of social isolation can promote unhealthy behavior and compromise iq scores. Social exclusion activates the same brain areas as physical pain. Evolutionary factors: social influence processes (conformity, obedience) generally serve is well, unless accepted unquestioningly. Ingroup favoritism: one tends to take care of their own group. Social facilitation or disruption: enhancement of easy task or disruption or difficult ones, elicited by the presence of others. Social loafing: the tendency to loaf or to do less work in groups. If lots of people in the group then you tend to work less hard.
