Theory - a set of related assumptions from which testable predictions can be made model. Applied research is used to find solutions to everyday problems, cure illness, and develop innovative technologies operational definition - the operational definition is a term that is used to describe the procedure of a study and the research variables. Experiment - a research design that includes independent and dependent variables and random assignments of participants to control experimental groups or conditions. Quasi-experiment - quasi-experiments address questions like experiments but in cases where random assignment is not possible. They get closer to establishing causality but they do not constitute proof. Meta-analysis - a research technique for combining all research results on one question and drawing a conclusion case study - a study design in which a psychologist, often a therapist, observes one person over a long period of time. Population - the entire group a researcher is interested in.
