Hindbrain - "reptilian brain", primitive structures shared by all vertebrates creatures (cerebellum, brain stem) Midbrain - system of structures bringing the primitive hindbrain to the sophisticated forebrain, aids in perception and in cognition and memory processing. Forebrain - "mammalian brain", responsible for complex, "animalistic" traits: self awareness, memory, personality, intelligence. Pons - section of brainstem just in front of the medulla that coordinates movement. Cerebellum - the little brain attached to the rear of the brainstem; it helps coordinate voluntary movements and balance reticular formation. Cerebrum - regulates our higher intellectual processes cortex (neocortex) - cerebral cortex and outer portion of the brain. Thalamus - the brain"s sensory switchboard, located on top of the brainstem; it directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex. Amygdala - two almond shaped neural clusters in the limbic system that are linked to emotions, such as fear and anger.
