Depression accounts for 10% of all disability. Emotion: the state of arousal defined by subjective states of feeling. Need cognitive consciousness and physiological response from the sympathetic nervous system. Facial expression (usually uncontrollable), pitch of voice, body movements. Mood: a pervasive and sustained emotional response that can color perception. Clinical depression can refer to a mood or to a clinical syndrome, a combination of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Not normal sadness, which we all experience. Clinical depression: depressed mood accompanied by other symptoms such as loss of energy, loss of pleasure, fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite. Major depressive disorder is a unipolar mood disorder. Can listen and be there for them, but need professional help. A lot of comorbidity (overlap) of anxiety and depression. No motivation to do anything because it feels like everything will turn out wrong. Changes in sleep (too much or not enough sleep) and appetite (increase or decrease)
