Document Summary
Step 1: contour integration - edges > contours. Figure side is perceived as being closer. Figure side is shaped by the contour. Interpretations involving accidental viewpoints are not preferred such as the penrose triangle. Memory for figure shape is better than for ground shape. Factors that determine figure-ground assignment: closure - enclosed areas are more likely to be seen as figure, size - smaller areas are more likely, convexity - convex sides are more likely, symmetry - symmetric areas are more likely. Occlusion - most objects are partly hidden behind others. Visual completion - inferring object unity (grouping) and object shape from fragmented image data. Amodal completion - partly-occluded objects, takes place behind occluder, amodal - we don"t actually see the completed contour. Modal completion - partial camouflage or low-illumination conditions, completion takes place in front, modal - we see a contour. Prosopagnosia - patients fail to recognize familiar faces.
