In class experiment will give a list of 30 items we have to listen and then we have to write down as many as we remember different conditions. Categories - do better if put words in categories - easier to remember. The more you encode something in terms of meaning, better it tends to be remembered. Memory system likes meaning - likes to understand things. Different conditions - regular list, distractor task, categories. Memory systems: recency effect suggests that items are temporarily held in a small, short-term buffer (stm) Short term memory is where you hold things while you"re working on them - temporary memory system: primacy effect suggests that rehearsal is required to consolidate items to long-term memory (ltm) Ltm - extremely large, long term knowledge of everything. You can remember things from yesterday better than last year but both still consolidated in long term, but if probe properly can remember. Retrieval - take something from ltm to stm.
