Power of situation: ie: see a person behaving rudely, assume they"re a rude person. Social behavior is largely automatic: unconscious most of our lives are governed by things we"re unaware of. Social psych is a scientific discipline: everything we know about how the mind works study of data from studies conducted under rigorous scientific methodology. Shows that common sense doesn"t actually give us an answer bc it gives us conflicting predictions. Outcome seems obvious and easy to predict in retrospect. Makes findings of socials psych seem trite and banal. When judging the decisions of others, hindsight bias affects our evaluations of them: outcome seems predictable after they happen, so we tend to be more critical. I knew it all along phenomenon the answers seems so obvious, but that"s because you already know the answer. Exs: invasion of iraq, elliot rodger and the ucsb shooting rampage (had history of mental illness), columbia space shuttle disaster, us intelligence and 9/11 terrorist attack.
