Automatic thought: fast, parallel, effortless, associative, implicit (unconscious) Controlled thought: slow, serial, effortful, flexible, explicit (conscious) New and complex tasks often learned using controlled thought; once learned, become automatic (e. g. , driving a car) Example of automatic thought: association between race and weapons (payne et al) Method: rapidly showed college students pairs of pictures (face followed by an object). Conclusion: when subjects were uncertain, there was a consistent statistical difference to choose gun after being presented a black face. Note: errors were small in number, yet consistent and statistically significant, errors occurred following snap" judgment and thus not relying on a conscious decision.
