Document Summary
Correlational evidence field studies and archival studies focused mainly on long-term effects. Causal evidence laboratory experiments that have focused mainly on short-term effects. Method: assessed tv viewing of 6-10 year olds in late 1970"s; follow up 15 years later; control for: iq, parental education/occupation, parenting style, child"s level of aggressiveness. ^ strong link between younger viewing of violent tv and later aggression. ^ younger children are more affected than young adults. (compare with self-fulfilling prophecy in classroom) Numerous lab experiments have demonstrated that exposure to film/tv violence significantly increases immediate aggression in children and adults: experiments from both social learning theory and aversive stimulus aggression. Media influences: video games & tv: increases aggressive behaviors, increases aggressive thoughts, increases aggressive feelings, decreases helping others, decreases empathy for others, desensitized to violence. Effects stronger when aggression (1) is justified (2) is unpunished (3) shows no harm/pain (4) is committed by an attractive (likable) person.
