Disadvantages actually doesn"t measure change over time. Only get a snapshot only in one point in their lives potential cohort effects (potentially problematic: cross-sectional example (fictional, significant jump in vocab size between 16 and 20 mos. Longitudinal - follow one age group over time: developmental designs, data collected 9/14, 1/15, 5/15, 9/15. Eg: every 4 months for a year.
