Document Summary
This is where the receptors (hair cells) are. Organ of corti is the central chamber where transduction happens. Hair cells have cilia embedded in tectorial membrane. All the hair cells synapse with what turns into the auditory nerve. ~the stapes presses against the oval window, which is a hole in the cochlea. ~cochlea is fluid-filled, stapes pressing on it makes pressure on fluid. ~round window is another hole for relief of pressure. ~if you unroll the cochlea, you can see that different frequencies make different parts of the basilar membrane vibrate. This is the first step in parallel processing. ~lower frequencies are farther along the basilar membrane. ~simple age is when you lose auditory ability. ~loud sounds make high pressure and destroy basilar membrane cells. ~tinnitus hearing ringing sound that isn"t there, like phantom limb. ~primary and association cortex are in temporal lobe. ~different columns respond to different tones, makes a tonotopic map.
