CH 2: RESEARCH IN PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology’s emphasis on Method
-emphasis is on thinking & seeking new knowledge
-learn how to explore the unknown
How do we gain info abt ppls’ personality?
-observation that relies on interp (unlike obj assessment)
-weaknesses: diffr obs may make diffr judgments
-strengths: complex phenomena may be examined & valuable insight gained
Clues to Personality
-applies to all parts of psych triad (thoughts, feelings, behavior)
-psych’s job=put together clues
Life Outcome Data (L Data)
-information that can be gleaned from events, activities, and outcomes in a person’s life that is
available for public scrutiny--eg marriage, speeding tickets
>what clubs do you belong to? How many speeding tickets have you received? What is
your GPA?
Who collects personality info?
-car insurance, credit companies, fb, advertisers on the web, personalized search results
Natural B Data
-based on real life
-diary & expr sampling methods
-EAR: electronically activated recorder
-Ambulatory assessment: using comp-assisted methods to assess behavior, thoughts & feelings
Lab B Data (experiments)
-make a situation happen & record behavior
-examine reactions to situations
-represent real life contexts that are difficult to observe directly
Extraversion
-what are some questions that could be used on self-report measures (S data)?
-how could these qs be adjusted for an informant measure (I data)?
-what behaviors could be observed to assess this characteristic (B data)?
-what life outcomes are likely to be related, and how could data on these be collected (L data)?

Document Summary
Emphasis is on thinking & seeking new knowledge. Observation that relies on interp (unlike obj assessment) Strengths: complex phenomena may be examined & valuable insight gained. Applies to all parts of psych triad (thoughts, feelings, behavior) Car insurance, credit companies, fb, advertisers on the web, personalized search results. Ambulatory assessment: using comp-assisted methods to assess behavior, thoughts & feelings. Represent real life contexts that are difficult to observe directly. >construct validity: extent to which a test truly measures a theoretical construct- >face validity: test appears to measure what it is supposed to measure. >convergent validity: a measure is related to what it should be related to. >discriminant validity: a measure is not related to what it should not be related to. Allows random influences to cancel each other out. Reliability is necessary but not sufficient for validity--invokes the idea of ultimate truth . A valid test measures or predicts what it claims to measure/predict construct validation.
