Chapter 1: examples and definitions of abnormal behavior. Psychopathology - the symptoms and signs of mental disorders; some are severe such as psychosis (out of contact with reality) and some more common such as anxiety. Abnormal psychology - application of psychological science to the student of mental disorders. Mental disorders can be defined by harmful dysfunction: Something inside the person is not working properly - biological, emotional, behavioral. The condition causes harm to person as judged by their culture; this is measured by the individual"s own subjective distress and difficulty in everyday functioning. Moving toward managed care and defining mental illness for insurance purposes; focused on cost-effectiveness. Not the result of conflicts with society. Syndrome characterized by disturbance of cognition, emotion, and behavior. Epidemiology focuses on the prevalence and incidence of mental disorders. Lifetime prevalence - number of individuals known to have a disorder at sometime in their lives.
