Dependence (addiction)- develop tolerance toward drug, withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol use before age 14 is a strong predictor of subsequent alcohol abuse or dependence. Peaks around late adolescence- declines in young adulthood. Heavy drinking can be more dangerous at 14 than 20 as it can disrupt myelination process & synaptic pruning. Depressants- slow down the activity of the brain & cns: medical purposes: calm nerves, relax muscles, sleeping disorders, list: alcohol, cannabis, heroin, morphine, codeine, barbiturates, Stimulants- most widely consumed drug (u. s. : list: nicotine (most additive), amphetamines, ecstasy, Methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine: stimulatns are drugs that stimulate the brain * cns, speeding up communication between the two. Hallucinogens interfere with the brain & cns in a way that results in radical distortions of a user"s perception of reality: profound images, sounds & sensations will be experienced, but they will not actually exist. These are vivid hallucinations: list: lsd, peyote, mushrooms, & pcp.
