Document Summary
Persistent pattern of inattention, and or hyperactivity-impulsivity which is more intense than what is typically seen in children of the same developmental age. Course: changes as child ages, symptoms abate in some cases (variable) Gender: girls (age 12)- tomboys, intelligent, talkative, prone to risky behavior, boys (age 7)- Core features: inattention- difficulty focusing, hyperactivity- running or talking non-stop, impulsivity- acting without thinking". Effects on relationships: peer & family- restlessness & intrusive behaviors, aggressive, negative style of social interactions, positive self-bias. Biological correlates: overactive behavioral activation system (bas) and underactive behavioral inhibition system (bis, problems recognizing distress in others (amygdala and frontal cortex underactive) Interventions & treatments: parent management training, social skills training, token economy, multisystemic treatment. Etiology: biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder- multiple causes, prenatal insults- anti seizure medication, more health problems during pregnancy, premature birth, toxemia, viral infection or exposure.
