Civil commitment- a set of procedures by which a person who is deemed mentally ill & dangerous, but who has not broken a law, can de deprived of liberty & placed in a hospital. Insanity defense- legal argument that a defendant should not held responsible for an act if it is attributable to a psychological disorder. Ngri- not guilty by reason of insanity. Synthetic sanity- administration of medicine to stand trial. The prediction of dangerousness- recent empirically supported methods for assessing & predicting violence have been developed that identify & measure violence risk factors based on clinical judgment. Outpatient commitment or assisted outpatient treatment- mandated by the court to take medication: 45 states have laws covering this treatment. Duty to warn & protect- extended protection to foreseeable victims: extending protection to potential victims as yet unknown, extended protection based on family"s reports, extended protection to property.
