Cardiovascular disease and cancer emerged as leading causes of death in the us and europe by mid century: medical and preventive care. Preventive care also witnessed tremendous advances during the century: medical and preventive care. By century"s end, public health interventions were waning in much of the developed world, with prevention being taken on by the medical establishment, big pharma, and, in the us, the insurance industry. During the 20th century, the place and the systems within which medical and preventive care were provided changed considerably. New changes reflected the confluence of advances in medical care as well as the creation of social welfare systems to address a variety of social problems. These social problems developed as a consequence of industrialization. The seeds of these changes began with the french and industrial revolutions.
