Document Summary
Early christianity began as a jewish apocalyptic movement. Ever since the beginning the jews were under the control of foreign rulers who suppressed their religion. In the first century, the jewish religion was completely under the power of the romans. The romans did not respect the jewish traditions and there were frequent wars and conflicts between rome and jewish militants. The romans destroyed the temple of jerusalem, the most sacred shrine of jewish religion. It was believed that during the second coming of christ, god would destroy the world and jesus would come once again and rebuild everything as the kingdom of god. Believed that this would occur very soon in their lifetime - the romans would be destroyed by god and the new kingdom would be erected. The main focus of the early christians was the immediate second coming of christ.
