Inter-subjective understanding of things: there is always order (social order) 6 pop quizzes multiple choice (lowest grade gets dropped), 10 memos (3 sentence discussions about readings/videos) name, class, section physical copy. Sociology: study of society, human behavior, interactions, social groups. Data: statistics, tangible evidence, numbers, surveys, social experiments, research, information, observation. Based on positivism- had to have proven and tangible evidence. Social constructions (of social groups)- changing all the time. Sociology about seeing patterns and collectivities in social context/ interaction. The sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and biography and the relations between the two within society . Makes distinction between private troubles (individual problems, character flaws, private matters) and public issues (transcend local environments; institutional makeup of society) Individualistic explanations do not work well in sociology; patterns of behavior and thought by observing groups. Patterns not obvious, but learning social imagination, etc will make them more apparent.
