Accept racial status quo - compensate for inferior status by asserting superiority. Reject racial status quo - assert solidarity with other nonwhites . Youth, alienation and appropriation of african american music. 2 types of alienation: structural alienation - felt by youth who are politically or economically disenfranchised or critical of status quo, social-psychological alienation - adolescent rebellion against parents and generational differences. Long history of appropriation of black music by non-african americans - part of reinvention of ethnic identity.
