National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)
Victim Reports
What is the National Crime Victimization Survey?
• Ask if they have been victimized by a crime
• Excludes persons in military, prisons, jails, foreign visitors and homeless
• In 2011, survey persons aged 12+ in:
o 80,000 households
o 143,000 persons
• Because the sample represents the US population of 12+, it can project from sample to
US population

Personal Crimes (crimes against person)

The NCVS provides information not included in the UCR. For example, the NCVS provides
• Information on reporting rates
• Reasons why people do not report crime to the police
Why do’t itis report crimes to the police?
• Victims do not report because
o They do not see their victimization as serious enough
