Document Summary
Introduction to mortality & global burden of disease. The past century saw rapid improvements in life expectancy worldwide. Around 1900, life expectancy at birth in the us was about 47 years. Around 2000, it was about 77 years (78. 7 in 2015) A similar pattern can be seen in many other developed countries, and many ldcs too. Life expectancy fluctuated between 20 and 30 years for most of human history. Half of all deaths were to children and only 1 in 10 lived to age 65. Death was caused by starvation among hunter-gather societies and by infectious disease among agricultural societies: around 1800, life expectancy in europe and the us was probably around 40 years. Equal numbers of deaths to young kids and seniors. Most common causes of death were still infectious disease. Life expectancy started to steadily increase around 1800 in some parts of the world .
