Document Summary

Discuss the differences between proximate and ultimate causations of behavior and identify types of each. Behavior- action that is done by muscles that are under control of nervous system in response to a stimulus. Study of ecological and evolutionary basis of behavior. Fixed action pattern: unlearned response to external stimuli. Environmental stimulus- doing things because of the environment, e. g. circadian rhythms over daily cycles, climate influences migration. Animal communication- visual, chemical, tactile, auditory actions, e. g. : vocalization, dances. Imprinting: juveniles imprint on first object they encounter. Habituation: learning not to respond to stimulus. Observational learning: observed behaviors of other individuals. Cognition- problem solving, reasoning, and tool use. Definition: maximum benefits or foraging at lower cost, doing whatever you can without using too much energy. Figuring out how many times one organism can drop its prey, in order to break its shell, at a certain height. Humans study only certain things in order to get a good grade in school.
