I. Introduction
A. Attention Gainer: Did you know that in ancient Greece, throwing an apple at someone was
done to declare one's love?
B. Reason to Listen: Ancient Greece has had a great importance in today’s society and has had
many influences on many things that we consider a part of our everyday lives that you may not
know of.
C. Thesis Statement: My name is Alexa Jury and my name is Winnie Swiencicki and today we
will inform you on the culture of Ancient Greece through five important categories.
D. Preview Main Points: The topics we will be informing you on today are Ancient Greece’s
greek mythology, art/architecture, important figures, language/literature, and the Olympic games.
II. Body
A. Main Point # 1: In Greek Mythology, there are twelve main gods/goddesses called the
Twelve Olympians. Through these Twelve Olympians, the ancient Greeks used them as a way
to explain the chaos of the world through human nature. (Pallardy, 2018)

1. (Sub-Point # 1) The Twelve Olympians were Aphrodite, Athena, Artemis, Ares, Apollo,
Demeter, Dionysus, Hades, Hera, Hermes, Poseidon, and Zeus. Each Olympian represented a
certain chaos in throughout the universe.
2. (Sub-Point # 2) According to the Richard Pallardy (2018), “Aphrodite was the goddess of
love, sex, and beauty” (para. 2). “Athena was the goddess of reason, wisdom, and war” (para. 3).
“Artemis was the fleet-footed goddess of the hunt” (para. 4). “Ares was the god of bloodlust”
(para. 5). “The twin brother of Artemis, Apollo was among the most important (read: feared) of
the gods. Son of Zeus, he disseminated the will of his divine compatriots through various means,
notably oracles” (para. 6). “Demeter, an agricultural goddess, was mother to Persephone, who
was abducted by the underworld god Hades to be his bride. While searching for her stolen
daughter, she accepted the hospitality of the royal family of Eleusis” (para. 7). “Dionysus was a
son of Zeus born to a mortal mother. When Zeus accidentally killed her, he sewed the young
Dionysus into his thigh and, when the young god emerged, passed him to the care of the
maenads” (para. 8). “Hades ruled the world of the dead, with which he was sometimes
synonymous” (para. 9). “The queen goddess of Olympus, Hera was both sister and wife to Zeus.
Though she is often depicted as reserved and austere, she was mercilessly vindictive when it
came to her husband’s [many] extramarital adventures” (para. 10). “Like many gods in the
Greek pantheon, Hermes presided over multiple spheres. He was a pastoral figure, responsible
for protecting livestock, and was also associated with fertility, music, luck, and deception” (para.
11). “Poseidon is best known as the Greek sea god, but he was also the god of horses and of
earthquakes” (para. 12). “With the assistance of Hades and Poseidon, Zeus overthrew his father,

Cronus, king of the Titans, and became the chief deity in a new pantheon comprising mostly his
siblings and children” (para. 13).
TRANSITION STATEMENT: Now that I have talked about Greek mythology and the
importance of the main gods, I will now talk about another important aspect of the ancient
Greece culture which is their art and architecture.
B. Main Point # 2: According to us.history.org (2018), “The arts reflect the society that creates
them. Nowhere is this truer than in the case of the ancient Greeks. Through their temples,
sculpture, and pottery, the Greeks incorporated a fundamental principle of their culture: arete.
To
the Greeks, arete meant excellence and reaching one's full potential” (para. 1).
1. (Sub-Point # 1) The Parthenon was one of the most commonly known structures in ancient
Greece. Known for its columns, the Parthenon was built in demand for temples on the acropolis.
It was built in honor of the Greek goddess, Athena. There were three different types of columns
used in ancient Greek architecture: the Doric, the Ionic, and the Corinthian. (ushistory.org, 2018)
2. (Sub-Point # 2) Another popular form of ancient Greek art were their sculptures.
Ushistory.org (2018) also says that, “Ancient Greek sculptures were typically made of either
stone or wood and very few of them survive to this day. Most Greek sculpture was of the
freestanding, human form (even if the statue was of a god) and many sculptures were nudes. The
Greeks saw beauty in the naked human body” (para. 8).
TRANSITION STATEMENT: Now that I have talked to you about both Greek mythology and
the art and architecture of Ancient Greece, Winnie will now talk to you about three more
different aspects of the ancient Greek culture.
