ENGL 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Victorian Era, Conspicuous Consumption, Rein
Document Summary
English 220 - lecture 14 - the adventures of a speckled band. Story takes place in queen victoria"s rule, which was 1837-1901. Her rule was known as the victorian era and is marked by repression which means society pushing fundamental humanity (sex, drink, spend money, emotions, desire) back. This era repressed the person"s appetite of the seven deadly sins. Society had a lot of rules or mores because social codes dedicated appropriate behavior. Reputation is important because it is one of the few things people had and people had to show that they were from the right sort once they got the money. If a person loses their reputation it is social death, people will fall to the bottom. The loss of reputation hurts the entire family and the family name forever. During the day the person is appropriate, proper, moral, and upstanding but at night the person goes wild. These people are wearing masks of social ideology.
