Competition has been a social construction since pre-history and feudal periods. Agon extended beyond sports is not only competition, but the killing of one"s opponent. The wish to fight, to find the best, is a constitutive aspect of personality and society. The agon motive has shifted to symbolic death, often in and through sports.
