Lecture 26 - additional thoughts on sports pain. Central to an athlete"s role in performance and in life. How we use pain tells us more about who we are than the effects of the pain. Pain = sensory input + (nociception) + subjective interpretation. Nociception perception meaning action. Theoretical considerations of pain management and control. Research suggests athletes more pain tolerant than non-athletes. Psychosocial thoughts on this conclusion are that athletes are socialized into pain management. Pain & suffering in sport: jirasek & f. hurych. The process of challenge, interpersonal rivalry, and the endeavor to achieve victory through competition . Competition has been a social construction since pre-history and feudal periods. Agon extended beyond sports is not only competition, but the killing of one"s opponent. The wish to fight, to find the best, is a constitutive aspect of personality and society. The agon motive has shifted to symbolic death, often in and through sports.
