GEN S 340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cell-Mediated Immunity, Antigen-Presenting Cell, Natural Killer Cell
Document Summary
Basic function of the immune system: the immune system works to maintain a person"s health. Destroys unknown, mutant, and cancerous cells: two branches of the immune system. Human immune system: protects us from infections. Viruses, bacteria, fungi, worms, and parasites: causes problems as well. Basic components: sentinel cells in tissues (waiting for foreign invaders and call out for help) Dendritic cells, macrophages, mast cells (allergies and asthma: circulating phagocytes (digesting) and granulocytes (kill) Neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils: lymphocytes: cells that can recognize particular pathogens (problems: allergies and autoimmune diseases) Initial immune response: in ammation- cut on a nger. Antibodies: antibodies recognize antigens (foreign organisms or toxins, antibody is an immunoglobulin (a protein) which is produced and secreted by b lymphocytes in response to an antigen. Cell mediated immunity: detects/ eliminated pathogens within the cell. Macrophages (monocytes) leaves bloodstream and engulfs toxins. Cellular immunity: consistutes immune protection resulting from the direct action of the cells.
