GEOL 303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Convergent Boundary, Plate Tectonics, Transform Fault
Document Summary
Deformation - change that a rock body undergoes in volume and/or shape (deformed) Deformed with pressure on the top and bottom. Elastic - temporary and reversible once stress is released. Temperature increases from zone of brittle deformation to zone of plastic deformation. Fault - fracture in the earth"s crust that shows clear displacement of one side relative to the other. To determine whether a dip slip fault is a "normal fault" or a reverse fault" requires the recognition of which side of the fault is the hanging wall and which side is the footwall. Footwall always sits below the plane of the fault and hanging wall always sits above it. Depending on fault motion, the hanging wall could be lower or higher than the footwall but it will always lie above the fault plane. Normal fault - hanging wall moves down in relation to the footwall. Mid oceanic ridges are made by normal faults.
