HUM 101 Lecture 3: hum notes 3
Document Summary
Dear coriolanus: according to machiavelli, there are 4 ways to become prince (in your case consul): personal skill and ability, fortune(good luck or the charity of friends), crime, through official support of either nobles or common people. #1 and 4 are how you can most likely become consul. You have already shown off your skill by leading the roman armies to victory against the volscian city of corioles. Although you hate the people, act as if you don"t. This doesn"t mean you must say you like them, just act as if you don"t hate them. Machiavelli does not advocate wholesale cruelty or a complete lack of generosity, it is possible for a prince to be too cruel. Anyone compelled to choose will find far greater security in being feared than loved. if the people hate you, you will not be consul. While running for counsel, he should of either hurt the people or scared the people.
