Bentham proposes a version of utilitarianism that works with simple math: you add up the good and add up the bad and see which one has more. Bentham: the greatest happiness for the greatest number. For bentham pain is pain and pleasure is pleasure. Mill says you cannot say all pleasures are the same. We have to gure out the weight of each pleasure and pain- mill. With mill, individuals have rights, don"t harm the other person unless they get a greater bene t. Under bentham, the sweatshops are ethical, more people bene t with cheaper products. Mill- slavery is immoral because each person is sovereign and if you make somebody your slave that you get rid of their sovereignty.
