PHIL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Teleological Argument, Cosmological Argument, Ontological Argument
Document Summary
The world was created by god, an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good being. Whatever begins to exist, has a cause of its existence. Therefore the universe has a course of its existence. Ontology is a branch of metaphysics dealing with the nature of being or existence. By definition, god is the greatest possible being imaginable. There are two ways of existing: in reality and in the mind. That which exists in reality is greater than which exists merely in the mind. Teleology: the study of design or purpose in natural phenomena. The material universe resembles the intelligent productions of human beings in that it exhibits design. The design in any human artifact is the effect of having been made by an intelligent being. Therefore, the design in the material universe is the effect of having been made by an intelligent creator made by an intelligent creator.
