Document Summary

Divine command theorists: those who believe religion and morality are intertwined (william lane craig) If god does not exist, objective moral values do not exist. Stuck with subjective arguments that do not apply to everyone. No god = no evil and no good, nothing but blind pitiless indifference. God"s commands provide the basis for moral duties. Euthyphro"s dilemma: something is good because god wills it or god wills something because it is good. If atheism is true, no one lays moral duties upon us. Humans are accidents of nature, evolved animals, animals have no moral obligations. If god does not exist, objective moral values and duties do not exist. The belief that what"s moral, and what"s immoral, is commanded by the divine. Every ethical system needs some kind of foundation. Dilemma: a situation in which you"re forced to choose between two options, both of which lead to unpleasant results.
