Document Summary

Weekly reading ~ foucault body of the condemned. 2: foucault begins the chapter with this depiction of bodily torture to set the stage for showing how punishment has changed since back then. The relationship between these two accounts is that the first shows an earlier example of punishment and how people went about punishing crimes, and the second shows a more modern way of dealing with punishment. The second seems more reasonable, structured, and fair. Inbetween the execution and the timetable, much about punishment changed. Punishment was no longer made a public spectacle. Also, prisoners were not made spectacles in public. It was now to reform people, not simply cause them misery. The fear of the cruelty of the punishment is no longer what deterred people from crimes, but instead it was the guarantee of punishment in itself. It was also no longer about physical abuse.
