It is a set of ideas about government and its purpose. Role of language and terminology in understanding ideology. National security policy: relate to rest of the world. Moral regulation policy: bedroom policy, do we want government teaching morals. Individualism: liberty, social contract theory, property rights, government can be good, equality, liberty. The harm principle: government should only do whatever prevents harm to someone else and nothing more. Government should be minimal: should only do what we cannot or shouldn"t. Emphasis on economic equality: redistribution of wealth, progressive taxation, social welfare spending. Communism and totalitarianism: government wants total control of all aspects of individual life. Anarchism= no government at all: not= nihilism. Government should act in the interest of the people. Populism means doing whatever people want to do: people do things collectively, fuses well with over ideologies, changes when you gain power.
