Anxiety level increases, through the roof: high anxiety. Causes people to do repetitive, ritualistic behavior. What you get out of it: you are relaxed, become controlled: when you take something bad away like a problem or something bothering you. Unique disorder because you must be exposed to some real to get this disorder. You have to be exposed to a trauma or death, or near-death situations. Real severe, significant, life threatening events or situations. Biological factors: twin studies suggest that genetic predisposition (diathesis, chances that each twin will have it, anxiety sensitivity. Physiological symptoms catastrophic thoughts: neurotransmitters such as gaba, serotonin. Learning or conditioning: anxiety behavior can be acquired through classical conditioning, maintained thru operant conditioning avoidance: negative reinforcement, observational learning may also play a role. Cognitive factors: certain ways of thinking may make someone more vulnerable to anxiety disorders. Lifetime prevalence: 5-12% for men, 10-25% for women: bipolar disorder (manic depression)
