PSY 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Feature Integration Theory, Anne Treisman, Simple Features
Document Summary
We can see details only at the center of the gaze. We make frequent eye movements to inspect objects of interest. Overt attention - selectively attending to an item or location over others by moving the eyes to point in that direction. Approximately 3 per second during the scene viewing. Saccades - most eye movements are sudden jumps. Covert attention - mentally shifting one"s focus without moving one"s eyes. Each saccade is preceded by a covert shift of attention. Clap your hands once when you see a white "target" square in either of the two boxes. One box will turn yellow prior to the target, usually atet location of the target. Cue indicates likely location of target (75%) valid. Valid trial - cue and target are on the same side of the screen. Invalid trial - cue and target are on opposite sides of the screen. Subjects allocate more attention to the cued location.
