Document Summary

Social psychology - scientific study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one another. Norman triplett [1897] - interested in social facilitation, people tend to perform better when other people are around. Example of bikers - against the clock vs head to head competitions. He studied children reeling fishing line alone or against a partner. Remember triplets - triplett proposed there"s more than one and they are constantly in competition, they perform better with their siblings around them. Robert zajonc [1965] - proposed a resolution to the mixed findings [most doing better but also some doing worse] of social facilitation research. Suggest that other people increases arousal which enhances dominant responses. Social facilitation will cause well learned behaviors to be better and novel ones to be worse. Remember zonk - zajonc proposed you"ll get a zonk if you don"t know it when other people are around but if you do know it you"ll get a zazzling applause.
