It"s interesting how chinese art is relatively for themselves while western art is to showcase to others some idea. China (literati painting: mountain-and-water landscape, forest-and stream landscape, etc, sprit of the place, scroll format is a journey, execution (restraint) shows moral character of artist not many details, doing minimal, manifestation of character. West: heroic landscape (e. g. mythology or battles), pastoral landscape (sheep, farms, fidelity to appearance, painting is a window , subject matter tends to have moral lesson for viewer, to showcase to others. Stately trees offering midday shade (by du qichang: poem at the top corner, stamps of collectors. Dwelling in reclusion in qing bian mountain (by wang meng: painting is abstract and form is changed but still very similar to real landscape. China (literati painting: landscape is typical subject, can be self-taught, amateur status ( gifts not money, spirit, not surface, scroll format, variable density of composition, execution (restraint) ink, little color, self-expressive.
