Hcz schools do close the gap in math. 22. 9 % per year is considered as a large effect. Student hcz but you don"t really know what was effective in hcz (teachers, class size) which is something that you can"t extract. Difficult to extract the different effects of each individual intervention. Easier to implement class size reduction than establishing a charter school. Some boarding schools programs proceed from the same idea: Giving more to a less favored audience. Negative peer effect from friends, brothers, parents But some possible drawbacks : bad peers, homesick, lack of parental support, stress, tensions between boarders In france, boarding school of excellence (behagel 2015, aej:a forthcoming) In the us, seed boarding school (curto & fryer, jle 2014) Number of years at boarding school - regress on treatment variables. Years at boarding = b0 + b1*treatment. Effect also in mathematics (like harlam) so proves that mathematics can be improved with better schooling.
