Nature/endowned/innate: abilities that may not be modified by individuals, parents, society; Hk is by definition modifiable: people invest in their education, health, body . Even attributes from childhood may be modifiable by parental investment; Ultimately, the only non modifiable traits are genes; Therefore, it is natural to think that nature=genes. Point of view taken for instance in 1994 the bell curve; With the addition assumption that genes greatly determine capabilities"; In that view, inequality are natural and can only be compensated. Traditional view assumes that genes play a central role in determining ability. Yet, many traits that are not genetically determined are very important for success in life: Non-cognitive traits: are not determined at early ages but are fundamental; Socio-emotional development : also determined by the quality of early environment (not genetic) yet fundamental for hk accumulation; Psychological/physical shocks: trauma, early loss, childhood diseases are again not genetic in nature but may have long term impacts.
