Church was a big part of medieval life. A lot of women ended up in the church if they had nowhere else to go (can"t find someone to marry, to avoid marriage, widows, etc) Mother of christ, born free of sin. Parallels between christ"s passion and her spiritual suffering. Saint bernard of clairvaux associates her with bride in song of songs. Worshipped as the bride of christ, personification of the church, queen of heaven, and intercessor for the salvation of humankind. Driven out of england in 1290, persecuted for usury. Belief that jews hate christ, thought to perform ritual murders. Blood libel - hunt children at passover. Massacre at york 1190 - 100 jews killed. Body was discovered after being thrown in a well. People believed he was victim of ritual murder. Approx 90 jews were rounded up as accomplices. Jew named copin admitted to the murder under torture.
