ANTH 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Santa Barbara City College, Aspero, Fish Hooks
Document Summary
Shows evidence of long periods of occupation. Some of the oldest textiles come from this cave. Settled villages; 8,000 years ago; semi, if not fully sedentary villages. Intermittent occupation between 8,000 and 5,000 years ago. Exostosis: a benign outgrowth of cartilaginous tissue on a bone. These sites, including the paloma site, provide evidence of a lot of anchovies and marine resources. Squash and gourd phytoliths and seeds (10,000 years ago) It was within these areas that people began domesticating squash. This site is possibly even older than the paloma site. You can tell the difference between a wild and a domesticated plant by the phytoliths. We see a lot of cotton pre-ceramic sites. Excavations here suggest that people were focused on harvesting marine resources, such as fish and shell fish. Also found on these sites were fish hooks and nets. During the 1970s to the 2000s, it was demonstrated that the andes civilizations were founded on marine adaptations.
