PSY 145 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Human Development Index, Sub-Saharan Africa, Income Distribution
Document Summary
Hdi vs gnp: the hdi does not substitute gnp but in many ways it contributes greatly to an appreciation of a society"s real status. The argument is that gnp, by itself, shows nothing about how people live and breathe in a society. Ideally, a high salary puts many social benefits and human-life changes within reach. Yet how this occurs depends on several other factors: what is the income"s composition. It is the actual distribution and use of the profit that is important, not just its amount a simple truth that is sometimes overlooked. Of this reason the hdi is a valuable complement to gnp in the perception and study of a community, if not for any other. There is no difference in ranks for four countries and less than a five-rank gap for. 29 countries out of 173 countries included in those rankings. The gaps are however significant for most other nations.
