Systematics= classifies organisms and determines their evolutionary relationship. In 18th century, carolus linnaeus published a system of taxonomy based on resemblances. 2 key features of his system remain useful today; 2-part names for species and hierarchical classification classification. Binomial= the 2-part scientific name of a species. Epithet= the second part of the name; unique for each species within a genus. The first letter of the genus is capitalized and the entire species name is italicized. Linnaeus introduced a system for grouping species in increasingly inclusive categories. Taxonomic groups from broad to narrow are domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Taxon= a taxonomic unit at any level of hierarchy.
