Document Summary

Population ecology= the study of populations in relation to their enviro, including enviro influences on density and distribution, age structure, and population size. Population= a group of individs of a single species living in the same general area: described by their boundaries and size. Density= the number of individuals per unit area or volume. Dispersion= the pattern of spacing among individuals within the boundaries of the population. Pop size can be estimated by either extrapolation from small samples, an index of population size (ie. number of nests) or the mark-recapture method. Enviro and social factors influence the spacing of individs in a population. Clumped dispersion= individs aggregate in patches: may be influenced by resource availability and behavior. Uniform dispersion= individs are evenly distributed: may be influenced by social interaction such as territoriality, the defense of a bounded spaced against other individuals. Random dispersion= position of each individ is independent of other individuals: occurs in absence of strong attractions or repulsions.
