Dendrites- little spikes on cell body; take incoming messages from other neurons. Neurofibril-they end up tangling eventually which leads to death of brain cells and degeneration. Nissl body- equivalent of the rough er. Axon terminal- send message from one neuron to another. Axon hillock- where axon grows out of neuron. Nodes of ranvier- spaces between shwann cells. Shwann cell- means that neurons are in the peripheral ns. Faniculi- all of the white matter surrounding the gray. Anterior median fissure- crack in the front of the vertebrae. Gray matter (commissure)- in the center of all the white matter. Dorsal root- comes off of posterior horn. Ventral root-comes off of anterior and lateral horn. Neuroglial cells= fill spaces, support neurons, provide structural framework, produce myelin, and carry on phagocytosis. Microglial cells= small cells that phagocytize bacterial cells and cellular debris. Oligodendrocytes= form myelin in brain and spinal cord. Astrocytes= near blood vessels; support structures, aid in metabolism, and respond to.
