Became popular in 1960s/80s: considers who is doing the labeling. Gone through the system, have label, now reacting to label. Labeling theories focus on shaming: two forms, stigmatizing shaming. Doing something in a negative way (making juvenile hold sign saying they stole: reintegrative shaming. Saying that what someone did is wrong within the community, but welcoming them back. Say they were a good kid it"s a onetime thing. Shamed in a way that makes them learn from their behavior.
