Drug use depends on social location: some will have easy access to drugs. Substance use is a regular part of life for many youths: experimentation as teens. U(cid:271)sta(cid:374)(cid:272)e use throughout history : opiates, cocaine, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis. Why do juveniles use substances: celebration purposes, coping purposes, pain relief purposes. Less acceptance than adult substance use: often seen as rite of passage for teens. Most (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374)ly used su(cid:271)sta(cid:374)(cid:272)es a(cid:373)o(cid:374)g ju(cid:448)e(cid:374)iles (cid:894)(cid:373)ost use to less(cid:895: tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs. Drug use: % of hs students that have tried at least one drug. Problems are much different for young people: age of reason: lack maturity to make reasonable decisions. Not future thinking or consequences: physical/mental development: brain is still developing and inhibits brain from functioning to full capacity. Interaction with authority: not well equipped to deal with authority figures: dangers are cumulative (most important): the longer you use these substances it is the harder to stop and it is on your health.
