PHYS 799 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Allergic Contact Dermatitis, C1-Inhibitor, Stratum Corneum
Document Summary
Intraepithelial langerhans cells ravel to nodes and present antigens. Dermis contains cd4 and cd8 cells; epidermis contains gamma delta t cells (part of innate immune system) Lichenification = thickened, rough skin; usually due to repeated rubbing. Macule = flat discoloration <5mm, patch = >5mm. Papule = elevated lesion <5mm, nodule or plaque = >5mm. Vesicle = fluid-filled raised lesion <5mm, bulla = >5mm (blister refers to both) Acantholysis = loss of intercellular adhesions between keratinocytes. Dyskeratosis = premature keratinization (i. e. below stratum granulosum) Lentiginous = linear melanocyte proliferation along basal cell layer. Papillomatosis = hyperplasia of dermal papillae surface elevation. Parakeratosis = retention of nuclei in stratum corneum (normal finding in squamous mucosa) Urticaria (hives) localized mast cell degranulation dermal microvascular hyperpermeability; wheals = erythematous, edematous, pruritic plaques. Type i hypersensitivity reaction (antigen binds to ige on mast cell or directly induces mast cell degranulation, e. g. certain drugs) Hereditary angioedema inherited urticaria, deficient c1 esterase inhibitor uncontrolled complement activation.
