Lps on gram negative outer membrane = endotoxin. Some bacteria have capsules polysaccharide coating that assists w/avoiding immune recognition and phagocytosis. Virulence factor = any gene product that enhances ability of bacteria to cause disease. Envelope (only some have) = membrane derived from host cell. Glycoproteins in the envelope allow for attachment to host cells. Baltimore classification based on how viruses produce mrna. Rna viruses are prone to replication errors, and use virus-encoded enzymes for replication; Dna viruses use host cell enzymes for replication. Viral disease caused by both viral replication and host immune response. Cell wall composed of unique polysaccharides chitin, beta-glucans, galactomannans. Yeasts = single cell, molds = hyphae (branching filaments) w/spores. Some fungi can vary between the two (thermally dimorphic) Most fungi grow best at lower temps (e. g. skin) Dissemination: hyphae can break off, and be carried along circulation. In immunocompetent host, tend to cause mucosal/skin disease, not invasive diseases.
